The Kapula Story
In the atmosphere of our workshop in Bredasdorp, near the southern-most tip of Africa,
well trained and multi skilled crafters transform our designs onto candles and ceramics
and individually create each item as a masterpiece of innovation and creativity.
The spirit of our beautiful country in the process of transition and rebirth is
reflected in these authentic and original pieces of craftmanship.
The richness of colour, vivaciousness, variety and wide spectrum of abundance in the African landscape influenced Ilse Appelgryn’s
profound love of design and colour, which expressed life onto the unique background
of handcrafted candles. The character of our South African country has been the
source of the multitude of designs that appeal to so many consumers worldwide.

profound love of design and colour, which expressed life onto the unique background
of handcrafted candles. The character of our South African country has been the
source of the multitude of designs that appeal to so many consumers worldwide.
Patterns, colours and textures from the bounty of the South African resources gave way
to transfer these designs onto other mediums as well.
Kapula started as a home based industry persuing a family tradition in 1993, Kapula now boasts
17 years of experience in the manufacturing and perfecting of this art. This has given Kapula,
warm art of Africa its niche in the design, décor and craft sector in both South Africa and
countries worldwide. Opportunities to display these beautifully decorated candles at international
and local trade fairs have established the company to represent itself profoundly amongst the best
in the world. Worthy and longstanding partnerships have been formed.
Only imported non-toxic pigments, fully refined wax, and additives of supreme quality are used which distinguish our
product from mass produced wares. Fair trade principles are applied to create a working environment of positivism and
participation by employees.
“The African rebirth is now more than an idea - its seeds are being sown in the regional communities we are busy building and in the
continent as a whole.”….in the words of Nelson Mandela (2004)
May these works of art inspire the end user to contribute to the promise of a rising continent and spread the warmth of light into
homes
worldwide.
